Kodama
Kodama is a piece of hand-crafted responsive furniture. The frame and armrest are made from a 102 year old oak tree with walnut inlay detail and hand-woven flax twine seat. The sensors in the chair respond to touch with a variety of sound recordings taken from the woodland the tree grew and the green woodworking process. Each user will experience a different soundtrack due to the way they interact with the chair.
There is often a distinct disconnect between an end product and its production. The user of a product rarely knows or understands the process such a product has gone through. The brief was to explore materials and product life-cycle and examine how to heighten the link between the sourcing of materials, the product and the user. By strengthening this link between the places from which these materials come from (in this case a woodland) and the use of a product, the user is prompted to ask questions.
